ScoliYoga: a Breath-Centered approach to Yoga for Scoliosis
Saturday, Sept 29 from 2-5pm and Sunday, Sept 30 from 10am-1pm
This two-day, (6 hr.) breath-centered workshop will introduce basic yoga poses appropriate for those with scoliosis and spinal fusion, and explore ways the poses can be modified to suit unique conditions. We will identify different styles of breathing, and learn how and when to apply specific breath techniques which enable us to reduce curvature, strengthen the spine and prevent injury. The format will provide the framework for developing a balanced, daily routine with the guidance of a qualified instructor(s).
Saturday: (3 hrs) Connecting with the Earth - Just as we build a house from the foundation up, we must learn to use the feet, legs, and pelvis specifically, to ground the spine and create core strength and stability. This class will focus primarily on coordinating the abdominal and pelvic muscles in breathing to refine qualities of power and grace in classical yoga postures.
Sunday: (3 hrs) Reaching for the Stars - Once we have our foundation, we are ready to build upwards, reaching through windows to envision our highest dreams. This class will focus on learning to engage the chest and ribs in breathing, improving mobility and breath capacity. We will repeat the same posespresented the previous day, learning to lift the ribs up and away from the well-grounded pelvis, reducing spinal bends and rotations, and allowing the neck and shoulders to rest more easily.
